Teaching Philosophy

As a lifelong artist, educator, and learner, I have always explored my love of creativity through sharing it with others. I believe that creative expression is inherently human, and that the arts are for everyone. Making visual art accessible to all is something that I am very passionate about, and I have demonstrated this belief through my work with students and community members of all ages in a variety of settings. My experience engaging the public through the arts in schools, camps, museums, and libraries has greatly informed my educational philosophy.

In my career as an educator, I have always found it essential to create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment where students can be free to engage with content relevant to their lives in ways that are meaningful to them. I am passionate about providing accessible, individualized instruction that allows ample exploration and choice. My experience working with diverse populations has shown me the significant impact that culturally relevant instruction has on students when they can connect to content that reflects their experiences.

As a teacher, it is my aim to encourage and support every individual to give them the confidence to play, make mistakes, and problem solve in the art room. I believe that teaching artistic techniques is equally as important as teaching students about the creative process. The skills that students learn when engaging in creative disciplines, such as persistence, creative thinking, and problem solving, are tools that will prepare them for success throughout their lives. Visual art gives us a unique lens to view our world, and I love being able to engage with the natural curiosity of students to create meaningful learning opportunities through the arts. I have found the art room to be a fantastic place to engage all kinds of learners within a positive and supportive classroom community. I pride myself on developing a curriculum that not only prepares students for success academically, but also socially and emotionally.

Art has brought significant value to my life, and I look forward to using my experience and expertise as an artist and educator to assist young artists in pursuing their passions.

Artist Statement

Through my artwork, I attempt to discover what qualities are necessary for a body to be considered “attractive,” or “good,” or “desirable.” Through the juxtaposition of collaged materials, I aim to both critique and explore concepts of body image, sexuality, censorship, diversity, gender, and how bodies interact with each other and the viewer.By pairing found images of bodies from popular media and vintage floral illustrations, a conversation is created between simultaneously disparate and complementary imagery. In my artwork bodies and nature intertwine, referencing how the feminine has been closely tied to nature throughout time. I often use the botanicals to obscure or otherwise censor various parts of the body, as a means of disconnect and objectification. This mirrors elements of my experience as a woman, and historical and cultural representations of gender. By exploring these themes through artistic intervention, I hope to come closer to understanding more about myself as well as our shared human experience.
